NeoHealth Check

The NeoHealth Check is a comprehensive weekend health assessment offered every Saturday and Sunday at our practice in George Central. It bundles anthropometry, point-of-care bloodwork, urinalysis, and HIV testing with pre- and post-test counselling into a single self-paid visit at a fixed fee of R350.

Provided by Dr Ethan Chellan and Dr Claudia Lakay, MBChB (Stellenbosch University).

Why we offer the NeoHealth Check

Most South Africans who want a thorough health screen face two limiting options. A medical aid wellness benefit is typically restricted to weekday clinic hours and depends on your scheme funding it. A corporate executive medical is priced for executives and usually involves a long form-filling appointment that working adults cannot block out.

The NeoHealth Check exists for the gap. One self-paid weekend slot covers the four screening components a thorough primary care assessment should cover, with HIV testing and counselling included as standard. The fee is fixed, the booking is on a Saturday or Sunday so you do not lose a workday, and the point-of-care blood results return inside the same visit rather than days later.

Patients who want a deeper conversation alongside the screening can combine the NeoHealth Check with a full GP consultation in the same booking, covered in Section 6 below.

What the NeoHealth Check covers

The NeoHealth Check is exactly four components. The package is intentionally focused rather than exhaustive: a small set of high-yield screening measures, done well, in one visit, with counselling where indicated.

Anthropometry

Height, weight, waist circumference, and body mass index. Waist circumference is more predictive of cardiovascular and metabolic risk in South African adults than BMI alone, and we record it routinely as part of the screening.

Point-of-care blood tests

Same-visit results, no waiting for the lab. The package includes haemoglobin (anaemia screening), total cholesterol (cardiovascular risk), and glucose (diabetes screening). The glucose can run as a random reading or as a fasting reading depending on what you choose at the visit.

If additional bloodwork is clinically indicated beyond the screening package (HbA1c for prediabetes confirmation, a full lipogram for cardiovascular risk stratification, kidney or liver function panels), we send that to the pathology lab and discuss the returned results at follow-up. Send-out lab work falls outside the R350 package fee and is billed separately or via medical aid where applicable.

Urinalysis

Full dipstick: protein (early kidney disease), blood (urinary tract pathology), glucose (undiagnosed diabetes), nitrites and leucocytes (urinary infection). Result during the visit.

HIV testing with pre- and post-test counselling

Rapid finger-prick test with the result during the visit. Pre-test and post-test counselling per HPCSA guidelines. Confidential. If the test is reactive, we arrange immediate confirmatory testing and same-day or next-day antiretroviral initiation under Dr Ethan Chellan, who holds the Diploma in HIV Management (CMSA). HIV testing is included in the standard package; if you would rather decline it, tell us at the start of the visit and the screening proceeds without it.

Pricing

The NeoHealth Check is a fixed self-paid fee, not billed to medical aid.

  • NeoHealth Check on its own: R350. Covers the four screening components above, in a single weekend visit, with the point-of-care results discussed at the same appointment.
  • NeoHealth Check combined with a GP consultation: R800 total. R350 for the screening plus R600 for the GP consultation, which includes any acute medication from our practice formulary dispensed at the visit.
  • Send-out pathology beyond the screening package (HbA1c, full lipogram, kidney or liver function): billed separately. Where you have medical aid, we bill the pathology to your scheme.

There is no separate consultation fee on top of the standalone screening package. The R350 covers the visit, all in-room tests, the HIV pre- and post-test counselling, and a written summary of results.

Who the NeoHealth Check is for

The NeoHealth Check fits patients who:

  • Want a comprehensive health screen on a Saturday or Sunday, rather than taking a weekday off work
  • Are self-paying / cash or whose medical aid wellness benefit is limited or already used
  • Want HIV testing included as part of the standard screen, given that most preventive screens do not include it
  • Want one weekend visit rather than splitting screening across multiple weekday appointments
  • Are starting a new health behaviour (smoking cessation, weight management, return to exercise) and want a baseline they can measure against in 12 months

It is not the right fit for patients who:

  • Already have an unused medical aid wellness or preventive care benefit. That benefit covers a similar core set of measures and adds ECG, spirometry, and a fuller lipid and metabolic panel where clinically indicated, at no out-of-pocket cost. See our preventive care page for the medical-aid-funded option.
  • Need urgent investigation of specific symptoms. That is a standard consultation, not a screening visit.

If your scheme funds a wellness benefit and you have not used it this year, that route gives you a broader package at no out-of-pocket cost. The NeoHealth Check is the better fit if you are self-paying / cash, want HIV testing as part of the standard screen, or want a focused weekend visit.

Adding a GP consultation to your NeoHealth Check

The NeoHealth Check on its own is a screening visit, not a clinical consultation. If you want to discuss a specific concern, review chronic medication, or have a more thorough clinical examination at the same visit, we offer the combined option for a total of R800.

The combined visit gives you:

  • The standalone NeoHealth Check (R350)
  • A full GP consultation (R600), including any acute medication you need from our practice formulary dispensed at the visit
  • One booking slot, sequenced so the screening flows into the consultation without you needing to come back

The combined option suits patients who are using the visit as a yearly health check anchor: get the screening data, then sit with the doctor to interpret it alongside whatever else is on your mind.

What to expect on the day

  • Arrive 10 minutes early to complete the consent form and a brief health questionnaire
  • Fasting is optional. If you want a fasting glucose result, fast for 8 to 12 hours beforehand. Water is fine. If a fasting reading is not material to your situation, a random glucose is still informative
  • Bring your ID, a list of any current medication including over-the-counter and supplements, and any relevant family history information
  • Block 45 minutes for the NeoHealth Check on its own; block 75 minutes if you have added a GP consultation
  • Wear something that allows easy BP cuff placement on your upper arm and easy access to a fingertip for the bloods

The HIV pre-test counselling happens at the start of the visit. Anthropometry, bloods, and urinalysis follow. The post-test counselling happens once the rapid HIV result is back, normally within 15 minutes. The full visit is over once the results are discussed and the written summary is in your hand or sent to your email.

After your assessment

Three outcomes are possible:

  1. All measures within normal range. You leave with the written summary, lifestyle suggestions where any apply, and a recommendation to repeat the assessment in 12 months.
  2. One or more borderline or abnormal measures. We talk through what they mean, what additional tests are worth running, and arrange follow-up. Most borderline findings are managed within the practice and do not need referral.
  3. A finding that requires further input. We coordinate referral through our network at Mediclinic George and partner allied health practitioners, and continue to manage your overall care alongside whatever further input is needed.

For HIV-reactive results specifically, the pathway is same-day confirmatory testing and same-day or next-day antiretroviral initiation under Dr Chellan, in line with current SA HIV Clinicians Society guidance.

Frequently asked questions

How is the NeoHealth Check different from a medical aid wellness check?

The NeoHealth Check is a fixed-fee R350 self-paid weekend package with HIV testing included as standard and same-visit point-of-care blood results. A medical aid wellness benefit is funded by your scheme on weekdays and typically covers a broader bloodwork panel (HbA1c, full lipogram, kidney function) sent to the pathology lab, plus ECG or spirometry when clinically indicated. They overlap on anthropometry and urinalysis. If you have an unused wellness benefit, use it. If you want HIV testing as part of the standard screen, weekend convenience, or you do not have medical aid, the NeoHealth Check is the right fit.

Can I add a GP consultation to the NeoHealth Check?

Yes. The combined fee is R800 total: R350 for the screening plus R600 for the GP consultation, which includes any acute medication from our practice formulary dispensed at the visit. The combined visit suits patients who want the screening plus a thorough conversation about a specific concern, chronic medication review, or a more detailed clinical examination.

Is HIV testing really included as standard? What if I do not want it?

Yes, and you can decline. HIV testing with full pre- and post-test counselling is part of the standard package because routine screening is current South African primary care guidance from the SA HIV Clinicians Society. If you would rather skip it, tell us at the start of the visit and the screening proceeds without it. Your decision is documented and confidential.

Do I need to fast?

Optional. The point-of-care glucose can run as a random or fasting reading. If you want a fasting glucose result, fast for 8 to 12 hours beforehand. Water is fine. Most patients are comfortable with a non-fasting glucose, which is still informative as a screening measure.

How long does the appointment take?

Block 45 minutes for the NeoHealth Check on its own. If you combine it with a GP consultation, block 75 minutes for both in sequence.

Are children eligible for the NeoHealth Check?

Yes, with parental or guardian consent. The screening components are appropriate for paediatric patients with the parent or guardian present throughout. HIV testing for children follows the same pre- and post-test counselling protocol with the parent or guardian. Reception confirms the bloodwork scope at booking based on the child's age.

What happens if you find something abnormal?

Most abnormal screening results are managed within the practice. Borderline cholesterol, prediabetic glucose, mildly elevated blood pressure, and similar findings are typical first-screen abnormalities and are addressed with a chronic medication, repeat test, or lifestyle plan. For findings clearly outside primary care scope, we coordinate referral through our network at Mediclinic George and partner allied health practitioners. You stay our patient throughout.

Can I bring a partner or family member for their own NeoHealth Check on the same day?

Yes, subject to weekend slot availability. Each person needs their own booking slot for the screening itself. Reception sequences bookings on the same morning where slots allow.
