Vaccinations: Flu and Tetanus
We administer Influvac (seasonal flu vaccine), the standard tetanus booster, and Hepatitis B vaccine for the SA-registered indications at the practice. We do not currently stock other adult catch-up vaccines (HPV, MMR, varicella), routine childhood EPI-SA vaccines, or other travel vaccines. The “where to go for those” section below covers the right destinations.
Provided by Dr Ethan Chellan and Dr Claudia Lakay, MBChB (Stellenbosch University).
What we offer
Seasonal flu (Influvac)
Annual flu vaccination from the start of the South African flu season, typically March or April. Influvac is the standard quadrivalent flu vaccine for the Southern Hemisphere season. Available for adults and children old enough for the vaccine. Most major medical aid schemes cover the consultation under standard primary care; the vaccine itself is sometimes out-of-pocket depending on scheme formulary. Reception confirms cover at booking.
For more on the current flu season and when to see a GP, see our flu 2026 guide.
Tetanus booster
Tetanus booster for routine schedule maintenance (every 10 years for adults) and for wound-care use after a deep cut, puncture wound, or animal bite. Available at the visit, no separate appointment needed. We can administer the booster at the same wound-care visit if you have come in for a cut or puncture wound; you do not need a separate appointment.
Hepatitis B vaccine
Active immunisation against hepatitis B virus infection in subjects at increased risk. We administer Hepatitis B vaccine for the SA-registered indications, which include, to list a few:
- Healthcare personnel
- Patients receiving frequent blood transfusions or clotting factor concentrates
- People in close contact with high-risk groups (residents of institutions or prisons)
- Travellers to high-endemicity areas and their close contacts
Other clinical scenarios may apply; the doctor will assess at the consultation. The vaccine is given as the standard 3-dose primary schedule (0, 1 month, 6 months) or as a single booster where prior vaccination is documented and a top-up is clinically indicated. Most major medical aid schemes cover Hepatitis B vaccine for the registered indications under standard primary care; reception confirms cover at booking.
What we do not offer, and where to go
We do not currently stock vaccines outside the flu and tetanus scope above. The right destinations for what's missing:
Routine childhood EPI-SA vaccines
The South African Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI-SA) covers BCG, polio, Hib, pneumococcal, rotavirus, DTaP, hepatitis B, and measles vaccines from birth through age 18 months. We do not run an on-site EPI-SA programme.
- Public clinic. EPI-SA vaccines are free at every public clinic in South Africa. The nearest public clinic is the right starting point for most parents.
- Clicks Clinic and Dis-Chem Clinic. Both pharmacy chains run paid private immunisation programmes following the EPI-SA schedule, with appointments online or walk-in availability. Most Garden Route towns have at least one branch.
- Private paediatrician. A few private paediatricians in the Garden Route administer routine childhood vaccines as part of their well-baby care.
Adult catch-up vaccines (HPV, MMR, varicella)
For adolescent and adult catch-up doses of HPV, MMR, or varicella where the childhood schedule was missed (Hepatitis B is covered above under “what we offer” for the registered indications):
- Public clinic for free vaccination, where the schedule has clear catch-up indications
- Clicks Clinic and Dis-Chem Clinic for paid private administration
- Private travel clinics in larger Garden Route or Cape Town centres often stock these for adult schedules
Travel vaccines, antimalarials, and yellow fever
For travel-specific vaccines other than Hepatitis B (hepatitis A, typhoid, yellow fever, meningococcal, Japanese encephalitis, rabies pre-exposure) and antimalarial prescribing:
- SAHPRA-approved Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre for yellow fever specifically; the WHO International Certificate of Vaccination must be issued by the centre that administers the vaccine
- Travel clinics in Cape Town and Johannesburg for full travel medicine consultations
- Some pharmacy chain travel clinics for the more common travel vaccines
We are happy to write a referral letter or summary of medical history for any of these visits if it helps the receiving provider.

Frequently asked questions
What vaccines does NeoHealth actually offer?
Influvac (the seasonal flu vaccine), the standard tetanus booster, and Hepatitis B vaccine for the SA-registered indications (healthcare personnel, frequent blood transfusion or clotting factor recipients, close contacts of high-risk groups, travellers to high-endemicity areas, and other case-by-case clinical scenarios). We do not currently stock other adult catch-up vaccines (HPV, MMR, varicella), routine childhood EPI-SA vaccines, or other travel vaccines. For everything outside that scope, the public clinic, Clicks Clinic, Dis-Chem Clinic, and travel clinics are the right destinations.
Where do I take my baby for routine vaccines?
The South African Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI-SA) is delivered free at every public clinic for every child in the country. Clicks Clinic and Dis-Chem Clinic both run paid private immunisation programmes following the same EPI-SA schedule, with appointments online or walk-in. A small number of private paediatricians also administer routine childhood vaccines as part of well-baby care.
Can my child still come to NeoHealth for the flu vaccine?
Yes. Influvac is available for children old enough for the vaccine, on age-appropriate dosing. We can administer the flu vaccine to children at the practice during flu season, including as an add-on to a same-day GP visit.
I missed some childhood vaccines as a teenager or adult. Can NeoHealth catch me up?
We do not currently stock HPV, MMR, or varicella for routine adult catch-up. The closest options are the public clinic for free administration where indicated, or Clicks Clinic or Dis-Chem Clinic for paid private administration. Hepatitis B is a separate case: we administer Hepatitis B vaccine for the SA-registered clinical indications, covered in the next question. We are happy to assess your vaccination history and write a summary or referral note for the vaccines we do not stock.
Can NeoHealth give me the Hepatitis B vaccine?
Yes, for the SA-registered indications. These include, to list a few: healthcare personnel; patients receiving frequent blood transfusions or clotting factor concentrates; people in close contact with high-risk groups (residents of institutions or prisons); and travellers to high-endemicity areas and their close contacts. Other clinical scenarios may apply on case-by-case assessment. We administer the standard 3-dose primary schedule or single boosters where prior vaccination is documented and a top-up is clinically indicated. For routine adult Hepatitis B catch-up without one of the registered indications, the public clinic or Clicks Clinic and Dis-Chem Clinic are the right destinations.
I'm planning international travel. Can NeoHealth help with travel vaccines?
We do not currently offer a travel vaccine consultation or stock travel vaccines. For full pre-travel medicine, travel clinics in Cape Town or Johannesburg are the most thorough option. Some pharmacy chain travel clinics offer the more common travel vaccines closer to George. For yellow fever specifically, the certificate must be issued by a SAHPRA-approved Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre.
Do I need a tetanus booster after a wound?
If your last tetanus booster was more than 5 years ago and the wound is dirty, deep, or contaminated, yes. If the wound is clean and your last booster was within 10 years, no. We can administer the booster at the same wound-care visit; you do not need a separate appointment.
Are flu and tetanus vaccines covered by medical aid?
Most major South African medical aid schemes cover the consultation under standard primary care. The vaccine itself is sometimes covered in full, sometimes covered with a co-payment, and sometimes self-paid depending on the scheme formulary. Reception confirms cover at booking.
Book your flu or tetanus vaccine
Book online or call reception. Flu season vaccinations fill up fast in March and April; book early in the week if you want a same-week appointment. Tetanus booster can be added to any consultation, including a same-day wound-care visit.
