SAMWUMED GP in George, Billed Directly at Reception

NeoHealth (Drs Chellan & Lakay Inc, practice number 1221566) sees SAMWUMED members at our George Central practice. SAMWUMED is the SA Municipal Workers Union medical aid, a restricted scheme administered through MEDSCHEME.

Members of any scheme MEDSCHEME administers are billed directly by us at reception rather than being asked to settle the account first and reclaim afterwards. Since day-to-day benefits differ from option to option, your card is verified before the consultation and your likely cost is confirmed before you go in.

Benefits verified against SAMWUMED 2026 guides: 14 August 2026

How billing works at NeoHealth

  1. Have your membership card and ID ready at each visit; reception uses them to confirm your option before you go through.
  2. Reception submits the claim to your scheme immediately, at the rates your scheme sets.
  3. If your option carries a co-payment, we tell you the amount before you are seen, not once the consultation is done.
  4. Where your option allows it, we dispense acute medication in-rooms; for chronic medication you can choose your own pharmacy or have it delivered through Medipost.
  5. Need a referral letter or a pre-authorisation for a specialist or procedure? We arrange it in-rooms.

SAMWUMED questions, answered

Do you accept SAMWUMED?

Yes. We see SAMWUMED members at our George Central practice and bill the scheme directly at reception. Bring your membership card and your ID.

Do I need a referral before seeing a specialist?

Yes. SAMWUMED requires a referral from your Family Practitioner before any out-of-hospital specialist appointment, and a claim without one is not paid. Exceptions include emergencies, maternity services, two gynaecologist visits per year for women, paediatrician visits for children under two, and specialist-to-specialist referrals. Book with us first and we arrange the referral with its authorisation number in-rooms.

Will I have to pay up front?

In most cases no. We claim from the scheme in real time. Where your option defines a co-payment, we tell you the amount before the consultation.

Does my option change what is covered?

Yes. Day-to-day GP cover, savings and co-payments are set by your specific option rather than by the practice. Reception verifies your card before the visit, and your scheme can confirm your benefit detail directly.

Do you dispense medicine?

For short-course acute treatment, yes. Dr Chellan and Dr Lakay each hold a Section 22C(1)(a) dispensing licence from the National Department of Health. Chronic medication is collected from a pharmacy of your choice or delivered through Medipost.

Can I be seen on a Saturday?

Yes. We consult 09:00 to 17:00 on weekdays and 09:00 to 13:00 on Saturdays, and we accept walk-in patients during consulting hours.

Is my scheme administered by MEDSCHEME?

Yes. SAMWUMED is one of the MEDSCHEME-administered schemes we accept, alongside Fedhealth, GEMS, Medshield and POLMED. If your card or member portal references MEDSCHEME, this page applies to you.

Other MEDSCHEME-administered schemes

MEDSCHEME administers these schemes, so the claims route and the provider verification process are the same. The benefits themselves are set by each scheme, not by the administrator, and some of these also require a GP nomination.
